Idol_Admin Move along; nothing to see here; move along …

For a television show that is apparently desperately seeking viewership for its upcoming season, “American Idol” sure is being secretive about what it has to offer. Even though Churchill Downs was a ghost town this morning as far as contestants, Louisville police officers were politely escorting newspersons not associated with WDRB Fox-41 off the property. WDRB is the local affiliate that broadcasts “AI,” which is wrapping up auditions here today for the upcoming season. I tried to circumvent… Continue

Idol_Admin "Just Too Good"

Tiffany Felicia stormed out of Churchill Downs, her anger apparent before she even opened her mouth. "All they look for is nerds, freaks," the 18-year-old said as she jetted toward the parking lot, speed walking like she had on tennis shoes instead of the 3-inch stilettos she was wearing. "They wouldn't give me a second chance," she continued, tears welling in her eyes and pooling on her ginormous fake eyelashes. "Simon was rude to me. Randy compared me to William Hung!" Felicia said s… Continue

Idol_Admin They're Here

The "American Idol" judges were just whisked into a bank of elevators and taken up to Millionaire's Row. (Yes, Simon was wearing his signature tight T-shirt.) --Angie Fenton, The Buzz Columnist, The Courier-Journal Continue

Idol_Admin Judging By The Sound of Things ...

You can't see the 20 to 30 "American Idol" wannabes who're hoping to score the golden ticket to Hollywood. But, at least for a moment, you could hear them cheering loudly from somewhere near the Gate 10 Lobby at Churchill Downs. For the past few hours, they've been sequestered up on Millionaire's Row. In addition to passing the time by practicing -- and praying, said one family member who declined to give his name -- the hopefuls have also been filmed by "Idol" producers for possible footage fo… Continue

Idol_Admin Call to the Post

The sound of bugler Steve Buttleman playing "Call to the Post" over and over breaks the silence at what appears to be a nearly deserted Churchill Downs. Surely we'll see footage of him playing the famed tune when the upcoming season of "American Idol" premieres in January. The only people around are a few officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department whose job is to keep people from going anywhere the "American Idol" producers don't want them to. Between 20 and 30 hopefuls are… Continue

Idol_Admin One more try

Ronnie Crownover, 25, is a lot more disappointed about being rejected than he looks. "It drained me. It just stunned me," said the Nashville, Tennessee resident. "I expected to go pretty far...I think (doing well) is more about how you interact with the judges." By his account, his audition, in which he sang Michael Jackson's "Man In The Mirror," was by no means a disaster. "When I was singing, everyone was nodding their head, liking it," he says. He adds that the judges told him he had a nic… Continue

Idol_Admin American dreamers

Her face streaked with tears, Aleshia Rowe, 19, is having trouble accepting that she won't be the next "American Idol." "They said my pitch was off so it was a definite no," Rowe, a South End resident said. She sang "Angel" by Amanda Perez and "they didn't aske me to sing another one...I was shocked. I've been singing since Kindergarten. I'm going to go home and cry my eyes out." She's not sure she's up for trying out again next year. Her supportive parents were at their crying daughter's sid… Continue

Idol_Admin Keep on singing

David Casper, 16, sat on a bench outside Churchill Downs beautifully crooning "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston. Casper, whose belt buckle is a big flaming guitar, won't be moving on in the competition, but he can't stop singing. A small, appreciative crowd has gathered around him, including his mother Robin and his grandma Betty. They came from Springfield, Illinois. Following his free performance, Casper, who sings in a Barbershop Quartet, shared what he judges told him. "They said I was r… Continue

Idol_Admin No, no Nicole

Nicole Turk, 25, made the top 45 in American Idol's fifth season, and she says some of the judges recognized her this time. At today's auditions, the experienced Atlanta lady sang Beyonce's "Work It Out," but, unfortunately, it didn't work out for Turk. "They told me they expected more from me," said the gorgeous gal with poufy Jennifer Hudson hair. "They told me to find my own niche." She thought picking a Beyonce tune would be the ticket, because during season five, she sang some Tina Tur… Continue

Idol_Admin Purple pain

Christina, 23, a downtown Louisville resident who sings in her church choir, didn't want to reveal her last name. She sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" in front of the other Simon; Simon Fuller, the creator of "American Idol." He said she hit all the notes, Christina said, but he also noted that she turned three shades of purple in the process and that did not bode well for a prospective performer. "I'm not that crushed about it," said Christina, adding that her favorite past contestant… Continue

Idol_Admin Where does she go from here?

Tisa Julius, 28, from Cincinnati didn't make it through with her rendition of Deborah Cox's "Where Do We Go From Here?," but she says she put on quite a show for the cameramen after her audition. "I was joking around with them. I went crazy," she said. "I deserve an Oscar for what I did. I said 'Get that thing out of my face! What? Is my butt too big?" Hey, Jennifer Hudson , won an Oscar and didn't win "Idol." So good luck, Tisa! Continue

Idol_Admin He couldn't "Sway" them

Dressed in a blazer, fashionably scuffed jeans and sandals, Garrett Walters, 16, from Frankfort, emerged from his audition with his dad John, 47. Garrett sang Michael Buble's "Sway" and Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me for the judges, but didn't qualify for the next round. He's not devastated by the results. "They told me my voice wasn't strong enough," he said. "I feel OK." Garrett's favorite rockstars are Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury, and his favorite "Idol" is season 7 win… Continue

Idol_Admin Supporting friends in tow

Nashville resident Jonathan Schaeffer was up from the Music City Friday to support his friend who was singing at the “Idol” call-back auditions. The friend must remain nameless, Jonathan said, because, “They (the ‘Idol’ producers) said he could not have his name publicized. “They let us in (together), but not where they were singing.” Medha Gandhi, from Columbus, Ohio, felt no such restriction. She attended the call-back auditions Friday with her boyfriend, contestant Patrick Warner. Patrick… Continue

Idol_Admin Rejecting idol

Matt and Scott Smile made the cut, but don't look for them on the show. "They turned down this really hot chic that blew Matt and me away," said Scott. So the brothers from Bristol Tenn. turned down Idol. "All the real talent they turn away for nothing but pop," said Scott. "I would have stayed if they let that one chick in." The brothers aren't giving up music though, you can see their band at www.myspace.com/thebuddz Katya Cengel, Courier-Journal Continue

Idol_Admin On leave

There were only a few left. Raven Buford was one of them. She wasn't asked to sing until late in the afternoon. Her voice wasn't strong enough, she wasn't what they were looking for. She was going to meet friends for dinner. Her father, Bradley, was going to run two miles. A full time member of the Army reserves he had taken leave to drive with Raven from their home in St. Charles Missouri to Louisville. "I'm not going to stop singing of course," said Raven, 17. "This was never my goal, just a… Continue

Idol_Admin No shame

Corey Hall didn't make it past the first cut Friday, but he didn't let that bother him too much. "It's my life, I control it," said Hall, an 18-year-old from Shelbyville. At the words "my life," Hall's best friend Amanda Barich launched into Jon Bon Jovi's "It's my Life." He's only been singing since the original tryouts earlier this summer. The producers told him his vocals "weren't strong" but, Barich added, the cameras loved him, filming him whenever they could. "They told me to come ba… Continue

Idol_Admin Too big for TV

Everything was going great for Clinton Spaulding until his second, and final, audition of the day. It was then that they told him his voice was "too big and great for television." Idol_Admin Humiliation

The camera follows her down the long walkway, out the gates and through the parking lot. She shields herself with her long hair. Her face is red from crying, but she stands straight and never stumbles as they push the camera closer. The older woman with her, probably her mother, looks my way. "Humiliating I guess," she says. The cameraman and woman with him hurry to catch the girl, hoping to squeeze another tear before she gets in the car. Finally they head back into Churchill Downs. The wom… Continue

Idol_Admin thinning out

The cars are slowly leaving the parking lot. An hour ago a contestant estimated there were 40 or so competitors left. Now they trickle out, two or three at a time every 15 minutes or so. They text, call and sing. A few, very few, even smile. Maybe one in ten makes it past today, a contestant estimated earlier. The others simply leave. Katya Cengel, Courier-Journal Continue

Idol_Admin End of the Road

Joey Albus' choice of song couldn't have been more fitting - "End of the Road" by Boys 2 Men. And Friday was the end of his American Idol road - at least for this year. It was a long road for him and his father, Rick, who got up at 3 a.m. Friday morning to drive from Cinci and make it to Churchill Downs by a little after 6 a.m. only to wait in line in the rain until almost ten when they were finally let inside. In Beallsville, Ohio, Joey, who is 18, likes to sing for his friends. He also san… Continue

Idol_Admin Not this time

Tara Bridge grasped the number pinned to her dress. "I'll frame this one for sure," said Bridge, a 26-year-old music education student from Cinci. She was so nervous during her second audition this morning that she had trouble understanding the English man who tried to put her at ease. "He asked me 'how are you?' like 20 times and I still couldn't understand what he said," said Bridge. Then there was her birth certificate and the all night drive her husband, David Cord, had to make home… Continue

Idol_Admin What is the 'Idol' look?

A steady stream of people with contestant numbers taped to their chests continue to leave the building at Churchill Downs Friday. Some are talking on their cellphones. Others are leaving, getting in their cars and driving away. Corey Porter of Louisville made the first cut today. But in the second round of eliminations, “the one that determines whether you go to Hollywood,” she was cut. “I’m cut. They can’t do nothing else to me,” she said, opting to speak to a reporter. Porter works at a lo… Continue

Idol_Admin Home Town HIt

Ben Brodfuehrer skipped work at a bottling plant Thursday night in order to be at Churchill Downs by 8 a.m. to support his friend, an idol contestant he described as having a "refreshing voice" that is a mixture of pop and country. She must have something, because the Louisville native made it through both trials today and is coming back Sunday morning for more, which is why Brodfuehrer won't release her name - he doesn't want to betray the confidentiality contract she is under. Idol_Admin "Idol" at Churchill Gate 10

People audtioning for "American Idol" will be entering from and parking near Gate 10 at Churchill Downs, say people at the Kentucky Derby Museum. A drive to Gate 10 turned up nothing, and the tip can't be verified because spokesmen at Churchill Downs declined to comment about anything regarding "Idol", saying they are contractually sworn to secrecy to maintain integrity of the contest. Also the Kentucky Derby Museum is totally separate from the Downs. Continue

The Courier-Journal's Andrew Adler looks at the question --- Is the shine fading off of American Idol ratings?
